Record in Camera vs. Record on Computer

There are kind of two ways to record content.

You can just record on your camera, pull the content off the card, edit it and create a video.

OR - you can record in the computer, where you can share your screen, livestream and do some other stuff.

More on that later.

TLDR: SUMMARY:

Here's my simple camera/lens setup recommendation:

Camera $1800 - $2,900:

Sony ZVE10 Mark ii ($1,200) with the Sony 16-55 ($1700) or the Tamron 17-70 ($650)

I've heardvery good things about the ZVE10 Mark 2, and either of these lenses would be awesome.

I personally LOVE native sony lenses, but the tamron is a good alternative.

1 - Camera

Your computer webcam is probably trash.

Even with the nice mac computers, the little cameras look like gabage.

I suggest people use their phones, or a full fledged Mirrorless camera.

Cameras & Phones are Way Better than your computer's webcam.

You CAN setup with your iphone or android phone, but our goal here is to have a setup that's permanently ready to go.

Every step of setup you add, means you'll be that much less likely to create.

So I suggest you buy a mirrorless camera, and a lens.

Canon and Sony make probably the best mirriroless camears for our purposes.

THere are two types of camera "calibers", Full Frame or ASPC.

I don't know a ton about canon gear at the moment, so I'm going to share what Sony gear I prefer.

Full Frame vs. ASPC

Full frame has a physically larger sensor, APSC is physically smaller.

That means Full Frame cameras are more desirable, but more expensive.

ASPC is less expensive, but for what we're going to do, still VERY good.

That being said, I'm a gear snob, and feel it's necessary for you to at least see what's in my camera bag.

Premium Full Frame Camera Setups:

The 3 Best Full Frame Sony Cameras for VIDEO:

for those of you looking for the best overall mirrorless cameras for video, there are two primary cameras.

Sony A7Siii & the Sony Fx3

Both of these cameras have essentially the same sensors.

They are both VERY good for 4k, amazing video.

THey both are VERY good in low light, and they don't have much for "rolling shutter", which is something where the video starts to look wobbyly and actually shifts when there's lots of movement.

Sony A7Siii is $3500 - Buy it here from amazon.

Sony Fx3 - Buy it here from amazon.

These two cameras are overkill for what you're doing here, BUT if you're going to create often, these are unmatched in quality, battery life, low light performance AND - the ability to almost NEVER overheat.

One thing people don't know is that most cameras will shut down your shooting if they get too hot, but these two cameras delivering un-matched quality, rolling shutter, low light performance and cooling.

Another super popular camera for video would be the Sony A7iv.

This is a hybrid shooter, that's $1,000 less, and performance very well for photos and videos.

Sony A7iv - But it here on amazon.

Full Frame is overkill, but I also don't like underbuying something, only to find myself wanting more features shortly after.

Stunning Full Frame Lenses:

Lenses are where things get really expensive.

I'd take a sweet lens, with a lagging camera in most scenarios.

The lens is what makes stuff look awesome.

I think that a 24-70mm lens is best for using near the computer. You really don't need wider than a 24in most secnarios, and you want the ability to zoom in and out to create the best composition.

If you can stomach spending more, the 28-70 F2.0 is Sony's new flagship amazing lense.  F2.0 means that it will create a clean image in lower light scenarios, and the "bokeh" or blurring of the background, will be STELLAR.

This lense is very expensive, and totally overkill.

But if you like good quality stuff, and don't want to upgrade later, this is a SWEET lens.

Top of the LIne Full Frame Lenses:

$3,150 - Sony 28 - 70mm F2.0 - The Most Premium Lens. Buy it here on Amazon.

$2,500 Sony 24-70mm F2.8 - Still super premium, Buy it here on Amazon..

$2,300 Sony 16 - 35mm F2.8 - Much wider, most of your video should be short at 24 - 35mm - Buy it here on Amazon.

$1,200 Sony 24 - 50mm fF2.8- small, light and a great option. Buy it here on Amazon.

These lenses are all F 2.8 or so.  That's going to mean it creates a nice blurry background, it will work in your studio without cranking the light super high, and it will look awesome.

F2.8 or less lenses are also much more expensive.

The "f"is the aputure, or how large of an openning there is to let light in, and it impacts focal points or something.

Long story short, thelower the f-stop, the more blurry the background will be AND the better the video will look in lower light.

Anywhays, these are all overkill.

Save Money on APSC Camera Options & APSC Lenses

Well, now that we're doine with the overkill, we can start focusing on more affordable options.

The APSC lineups from Sony are rock solid.

Older generations can save you money too!

$1,200 Sony ZVE10 II (mark 2) - Buy it here on amazon.

The ZVE10 mark 2 is hailed as one of the best camears for creators.  This is probably what I'd recommend.

$1,500 Sony a6700 - Buy it here on amazon.

$1,000 Sony a6400 - Buy it here on amazon

A little older model for this would be the A6400, which is what I often use for streaming into the computer.

APSC More Affordable Lenses:

Now this is confusing with APSC lenses. Their "mm" actually isnt' equal to a full frame lens.

APSC has a "crop" view.

All that means is the millimeter they give you on the lense is NOT what you're actually going to see.

APSC = 1.5x full frame equivelent.

You put a 50mm full frame lens on an APSC camera, it will actually be a 75mm on the APSC camera.

So what I show you here needs to be multiplied by 1.5x to know what zoomit will actually be at.

$420 Sigma 14mm 1.4 APSC Lens -Buy it here on Amazon.

$1,700 Sony 16-55 f2.8 APSC Zoom Lens - Buy it here on amazon.

$1,300 Sony 16-28 f2.8 MM Full frame lens - Buy it here on amazon.

$650 Tamron 17-70 F2.8 APSC Lens. Buy it here on amazon.

I think the Tamron 17-70 APSC is a good option for a less expensive, good budget setup.

My Recommended Setup $1800 - $2,900:

Sony ZVE10 Mark ii ($1,200) with the Sony 16-55 ($1700) or the Tamron 17-70 ($650)

I've heardvery good things about the ZVE10 Mark 2, and either of these lenses would be awesome.

I personally LOVE native sony lenses, but the tamron is a good alternative.

$1,700 Setup:

$650 Tamron 17-70 F2.8 APSC Lens. Buy it here on amazon.

$1,200 Sony ZVE10 II (mark 2) - Buy it here on amazon.

$2,900 Setup:

$1,200 Sony ZVE10 II (mark 2) - Buy it here on amazon.

$1,700 Sony 16-55 f2.8 APSC Zoom Lens - Buy it here on amazon.

What Does Rob Use?

Iuse a Sony a6400 camera with a sigma 14mm 1.4 lens.

Adapters & Cables for Camera to Computer.

Many of the newer cameras can connect to the computer via USB C, and just stream.

Most people will use one of the two prominent HDMI to computer cards below.

I really like to record in the computer using ECAM Live, Loom or OBS.

You can take the video feed, along with a screen record, and create some pretty good dynamic content.

HDMI Capture Card:

The newer sony cameras can act as a "webcam" through the USB connection, but in all my research and trials, using the USB creates laggy, choppy video.

When you use the USB connection, it makes your computer and USB process large amounts of data, which slows things down.

Instead of using the USB connection, you should spend more money and buy either the elgato camlink 4k,or the new aver camstream.

The Elgato 4k Camlink will transform any regular HDMI output camera, into a webcam (but it's USB A, which requires a hub or dongle)

$90 Elgato 4k Camlink - HDMI to USB A capture source. Buy Here on Amazon.

$119 Aver Camstream 4k - HDMI to USB C (better for new laptops) - buy it here on amazon.

The Elgato camlink is rock-solid, but it takes your HDMI and goes to a USB  A (the old big size that NO laptop has anymore).

If you have a mac computer, you'll also need a very high quality thunderbolt 4/5 or usb c hub that takes the USB A and makes it into USB C or thunderbolt.

The Aver Camstream is newer, but some youtubers I respoect have said it's a great option. It's very new.

Watch about Camstream:

HDMI Cables:

You will need HDMI cables to go from your camera to theadapter.

Full frame cameras usually have a FULL SIZED HDMI port right on the camera

APSC camers almost always have a micro-HDMI output.

That peans you'll need to get either an HDMI to HDMI cable, ot a Micro-HDMI to HDMI cable.

APSC = Micro-HDMI out.

Full Frame = Full HDMI out.

make sure to get the right HDMI cables. Also, remember you don't want the cheapest ones.

Good Video Lighting: Amaran Verge Max

Lighting is definately a major part of this, and there's a fairly new light that's PERFECT for this.

If I wer buying a light today, I would buy the new Amaran

$250 Amaran Verge 22 inch Light: Buy it here on Amazon.vid

Microphones:

I tend to like the microphones from either Rode, Shure, or Elgato.

When you buy these microphones, you often need an XLR input system.

Recently though, many of the high quality "podcast" microphones havecome with a hybrid system of USB or the more advanced XLR.

$250 Shure MV7 USB/XLR microphone - Buy it here on amazon.

$200 Rode Podmic - USB Buy it here on amazon.

$150 Elgato Wave 3 - USB Mic - Buy it here on amazon.

Elgato Teleprompter:

I can't emphasize this enough, having this teleprompter makes content creation 500x easier.

$300 Elgato Prompter: Buy it here on amazon.

This thing is absolutely amazing. Inexpensive, simple & easy to use.

RGB Backlights:

Adding some color to your background makes stuff look much better.

I like what Aputure and Amaran (same parent company) has.

$300 Aputure Amaran 300C Color Light - Buy it here on amazon.

$279 Amaran P60C RGB Panel - Buy it here on amazon.

You will want to get a lightstand of some sort for this.

I like C-Stands, and the adapters to get it on the floor.

Software:

Ecamm Live. -Mac.

OBS - Mac or Windows

Lightstands, Tripods & C-Stands

How do you setup all these things?:

Your Amaran Verge Keylight? - It attaches to your desk.

Camera & Prompter: Use this Small Rig Mounting System: Buy it here on Amazon

Your microphone: Either use a desk stand or a podcast adjustable arm.
